Ranging from new graduates to long established companies, the Lighten Up designers are exploring diverse routes towards sustainable lighting design. The approaches you’ll find here include:
A focus on efficiency: new uses and looks for energy-efficient lighting technology, renewable energy sources, monitoring energy use and motivating behaviour change.
Awareness of material choices: sustainably produced natural resources, local production, reclaimed or recycled materials.
Consideration of the relationship between product and user: adaptability and responsiveness, user as maker, and designs that recall past times.
Long-term thinking: products that last a lifetime, and design with future lifecycles in mind.
So get switched on. You never know, you may even enjoy your very own ‘lightbulb moment’...
Lighten Up follows in the footsteps of Sit Up: Sustainable Seating Stories, which investigated the journeys of sixteen sustainable seats from inspiration and development into production and use, demonstrating a broad range of design approaches all propelled by the belief that design can help create a better world. First exhibited at 100% Design 2007, Sit Up received the Hidden Art Award for Best Appearance During the London Design Festival, and toured to Singapore Design Festival 2007.
"100% Design has been lucky enough to work with [re]design for two
years running and our audience response to their work has been
consistently positive; always cited as a must see within the event.
Designers visit 100% Design to be inspired, and Lighten Up engaged our
audience by pushing their boundaries and re-setting minimum levels of
acceptability in terms of sustainable lighting design. The feature
itself was a delightful example of how to re-use everyday materials and
apply them in a novel way in order to wow an educated audience, without
over extending on resource foot print. Moreover, visitors were
particularly impressed by the quality of work on show, with a curated
event consisting of a number of high profile as well as up and coming
design talent delivering real joy and enthusiasm to 100% Design 2008."
